Brown University is a private university, in Providence, RI, also known as the `Renaissance City`, which is the capital and the most populated city in the state of Rhode Island, and one of the 1st established cities in USA. Providence was founded in 1636, by Roger Williams, who was a religious exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Roger named the area after `God's merciful Providence`, because he believed that God was responsible for revealing such a heavenly settlement.
The university was founded in 1764, as the College of Rhode Island in Warren, and started to register students one year later. It was moved to its current location, on College Hill, overlooking Providence City, in 1770, and it was renamed as Brown University, in 1804, after Nicholas Brown, who was a significant local merchant and who used to give consistent gifts to the university.
Brown was the first educational institution in the nation that accepted students, regardless of their religion. Academically, the university consists of the Graduate School, The College, which is the oldest school of Brown University, dating since 1764, and Alpert Medical School, which was started in 1811, known for its eight-year Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME), representing one of the most selective programs in the States.>
The 37 varsity athletic teams, from Brown University, are known as the Brown Bears, who compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Ivy League athletic conference. According to U.S. News & World Report, the university's athletic programs are among the top 20 athletic programs in the country. Brown's Women's Rowing Team has won 6 national titles in the last 12 years, and the football team has won the 2005 Ivy League Championships, sharing the 1999 Ivy League title with Yale.
